Most of them are panicking about the present situation. Since the virus is fairly new, there are many unanswered questions. And in all this chaos, we are desperate for a cure and end up falling victim to the myths conjured by some for personal gain or whatever superstitious belief they may have.
Unfortunately, these misconceptions and myths about Coronavirus are spreading rapidly. They need to be contained, explained logically, and put to an end.
What are the effects of these misconceptions about Coronavirus?
They are very serious and life-threatening. The above news is not the only case that has been reported. There are so many more out there.

Firstly, Let’s throw some light on Coronavirus.
Coronavirus is the name of a family of viruses that has the potential to cause diseases in both animals and people. WHO named the present coronavirus as COVID-19, because it was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, China.

Myth 1: Wearing a Face Mask Will Protect You From Getting Infected
Myth Buster: This is the most highly debated and confusing topic ever since the outbreak. When it comes down to protection, Yes, a medical-grad facemask (N95 or N100 models) can filter a high percentage of airborne viral particles. These masks must and should be reserved for health care workers.
The purpose of us, the general public, wearing a mask is to prevent people who are already infected from spreading the virus through droplets from their nose or mouth.
The incubation period of COVID-19 that is the time between exposure to the virus and display of symptoms ranges from 1 to 14 days.
In this period, the individual is a carrier and can spread the virus through droplets from their nose and mouth. Wearing a mask can reduce the number of chances of spreading the virus.
Hence, we are advised to wear a face mask everytime we step out of our home. The mask can be surgical masks, cloth masks etc. Please do not stock up on masks. We need to save the N-95 and N-100 for health care workers.
If you are using a cloth mask, please wash them regularly. Disposable masks should not be used more than once. If your mask becomes moist, please replace it with another.
The mask should also fit you snugly. There should be no open spaces on the sides of the mask.
Also, refrain from touching the mask once worn and after removing the mask, make sure you wash/sanitize your hand right after.
So in conclusion, Wearing a cloth or disposable face mask protects the ones around you. So, wear a mask everytime you leave your home irrespective of whether you are sick or not.
Myth 2: Spraying or ingesting bleach, alcohol, methanol or ethanol will protect you against COVID-19
MythBuster: Spraying or Ingesting bleach, alcohol, methanol or ethanol WILL NOT protect you against COVID-19 and can be very dangerous. It will in fact cause harm to you and can also lead to life threatening situations.
These substances are toxic and can cause irritation and damage to your skin.
Bleach and disinfectants should be only used to disinfect surfaces, especially those touched regularly, like door handles, table tops, etc.
We recommend usage of rubber gloves while disinfecting/cleaning with these chemicals. It must also be kept out of reach from children. After you have successfully cleaned the surfaces, you must and should wash/sanitize your hands with soap or any alcohol based sanitizer.

Myth 3: Exposing yourself to the Sun or higher temperatures prevents COVID-19
MythBuster: Countries with fairly higher temperature and low temperature conditions have reported cases of Coronavirus. Hence, no matter the weather or temperature, you are vulnerable to getting infected by this virus.
Also, taking a hot bath also does not prevent you from catching this virus. In fact you can burn yourself if you bathe with extremely hot water.
Remember readers, the virus can enter through your nose, eyes, and mouth. Washing your hands regularly using soap can prevent the virus, if present on your hands, from infecting you.
UV lamps produce UV radiation which can cause irritation and temporary/permanent damage. So stick to the basic methods of using soap or sanitizer, which are effective.
Myth 4: COVID-19 is spread through house flies, mosquitoes or pets
MythBuster: There is no evidence to support that one can get infected by house flies or mosquito bites. The virus spreads through droplets from a sick person when they cough, sneeze or speak. One can also get infected if they touch an infected surface, and then touch their face.
Pets- Dogs are susceptible to the family of Coronavirus. However, to prevent your pets from being infected, wash your hands before and after you touch/pet them. If you are feeling sick, it is best to maintain distance from them.
We request you to not get anxious and disown them by leaving them homeless. They provide a great deal of support and comfort, and can be your anchor at this testing time.
Myth 5: Only old people and kids below the age of 12 are vulnerable to this virus.
MythBuster: All age groups are vulnerable to this virus and can be infected if exposed to it. People with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, BP, heart disease, respiratory disorders are more vulnerable to getting severly infected by it.
WHO advises people of all age groups to take all the steps necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones. Remember youngsters, you can be a carrier and spread the virus to someone who can get severely infected.

Myth 6: Eating Garlic or Immunity Boosting food can prevent you from being infected.
MythBuster: While drinking/eating immunity boosters can boost your immunity, that does not mean one won’t be vulnerable to getting infected. Remember, healthy or not, one can get infected by this virus. The only difference is the severity of infection.

Myth 7: Products imported from China can infect you
MythBuster: Although the virus can survive for a short period on surfaces, there is no evidence to support the above myth. No cases have been reported so far that have risen from importing products from China.
However, it is good practice to disinfect any products after you purchase them during this time. Follow necessary instructions while cleaning, and remember to wash your hands with soap/ sanitize soon after.
Myth 8: You can’t get infected by Coronavirus, once recovered.
MythBuster: There have been so many reported cases that prove the opposite of the above statement. However, there are no definite answers, as people need to develop “immune memory” to remain immune.
Remember Prevention is better than Cure.
Hence, stay protected by following social distancing and washing hands very often.
Also, maintain a distance of 3 ft when you go out.
Myth 9: Social Media is a reliable source for updates on CoronaVirus
MythBuster: Social Media is where the myths are brewing. So DO NOT BELIEVE everything you read on Whatsapp forwards, Facebook etc.
More importantly, do not engage in unnecessary forwards. Please check your facts on relying websites like WHO, before you do so.
Myth 10: Holding your breath for ten seconds without sensing any discomfort is a sign you don’t have COVID-19
MythBuster: The only way to confirm you are not infected by COVID-19 is to get tested in hospitals that conduct tests in your area. Remember to wear a mask, and sanitize/wash your hands soon after.
